Elegant Typography with Mentions: A Script Font for Modern Web Design

Choosing the Right Font for a Coaching Website

I was working on a new coaching website recently, aiming for a clean, personal, and trustworthy look. The client wanted to highlight authenticity and emotional connection, so I started exploring script fonts for the hero section. That’s when I found Mentions—a flowing handwritten font that immediately caught my eye. It had that elegant, human touch I was looking for without feeling overly stylized or hard to read.

First Impressions: Testing Mentions in a Hero Section

I dropped Mentions into the hero headline: “Empowering Women to Lead with Confidence.” Right away, the text felt more approachable. The soft curves and natural stroke variations gave it a warm personality. It wasn’t just a font choice—it was a brand tone decision. Mentions brought a sense of intimacy and care to the layout, aligning perfectly with the client’s mission.

Understanding the Style and Personality of Mentions

Mentions falls under the Script Amp category, which means it’s a decorative, flowing font designed for impact rather than long-form reading. It’s not a workhorse font like a sans serif body typeface. Instead, it shines as a display font—perfect for headlines, callouts, and short branding statements. Its handwritten appearance makes it ideal for creative brands, wellness coaches, boutique shops, and lifestyle bloggers who want to add a personal, handcrafted feel to their digital presence.

Where Mentions Works Best

This font really comes alive in hero sections, logo text, and CTA buttons where visual impact matters more than extended readability. I’ve used it successfully for:

It’s especially effective when paired with a minimalist layout, letting the font’s character take center stage.

Readability and Responsiveness in Web Design

While Mentions is beautiful, I always test fonts across devices and screen sizes. On mobile, I found that using Mentions for headlines worked well as long as the font size stayed above 24px. Anything smaller started to lose clarity, especially in button text or subheadings. I also made sure to avoid using it over busy background images without a subtle overlay or contrast adjustment. A light text shadow or semi-transparent background box helped maintain legibility when placing Mentions over photos or gradients.

Dark vs. Light Backgrounds

On dark backgrounds, the font’s thin strokes stayed visible but benefited from a slightly lighter color or soft glow effect. On light backgrounds, a deep charcoal or black shade gave the best contrast without looking harsh. For accessibility, I made sure to test against WCAG contrast guidelines, especially when using it for calls to action or key messaging.

Font Pairing for a Balanced Layout

One of the most important parts of using a decorative font like Mentions is choosing the right companion. I paired it with a clean sans serif for body text and navigation links. This helped maintain visual hierarchy and readability throughout the site. For example, using Mentions for “Your Journey Starts Here” in the hero section, then switching to a modern sans like Inter or Lato for the supporting paragraph created a strong contrast that guided the eye naturally.

More Pairing Ideas

If you’re designing a more editorial-style website or a blog, pairing Mentions with a serif font like Playfair Display can give your layout a refined, magazine-like feel. For a more casual brand voice, try combining it with a rounded sans serif to keep the tone friendly and approachable. The key is balance—let Mentions be the star while keeping supporting text clean and functional.

Practical Considerations for Web Use

Before finalizing the font for the coaching site, I checked the webfont availability and loading performance. Mentions comes in multiple formats including WOFF and WOFF2, which are optimized for fast loading. I also made sure to only load the necessary weights—usually regular and bold—to keep the site speed in check. Too many font variations can slow down a page, especially on mobile connections.

What to Check Before Using Mentions

When selecting any premium font for a client or commercial project, it’s important to verify:

Mentions offers solid support across these areas, making it a reliable choice for digital brand kits and web templates.

Final Layout Decisions and Brand Impact

By the end of the project, Mentions had become a core part of the brand’s visual identity. We used it consistently across the homepage hero, service page headers, and social media graphics exported from the site. The result was a polished, cohesive look that felt personal yet professional. Visitors could sense the care in the design choices, which helped build trust and engagement from the first scroll.

When to Use Mentions in Your Next Project

If you're working on a portfolio site, a product landing page, or a small business website that values personality and warmth, Mentions is worth testing. It’s especially effective when you want to inject a sense of authenticity and craftsmanship into modern web design. Just remember to use it thoughtfully—save it for moments where visual expression matters most, and pair it with clean, readable fonts to keep the layout grounded.
